Iliad-BE: Free Memory

Hi,
I have received my iliad back from Irex. I am trying to install and use apps from the softwares list.

As part of this I tried to open some chm files(5+MB) using FBReader and all opened up like a charm. Though it was a bit awkward to use FBReader. Had to consult the PC version repeatedly.

I was wondering about the CHM filesize vs fbreader memory loading issue.

So far I havent hit up on this limit with CHM files. Tonight I will try to read the PHP manual as chm and mobi-converted.

On querying the iliad's free memory(free), i could find only 5MB was free.

Is this normal? Is there a bunch of not so important apps that can be stopped to give more free memory?

EDIT:
A small correction: On fresh boot, the iliad shows 18MB of free memory. So possibly some apps are left running. I did save a ps list. Will check on this later.

Thanks
hari

Something you could try is to add swap space, see Swap on iLiad.

If the MOBI version is acceptable, it should not run out of memory because the Java MOBI Reader does not read the entire file into memory.

Thanks wallcraft. I will try and hit the upper limit, tonight. Then I will try to put in swap and see if this increases the limit.

I did hit up on the limit or rather beyond it. I cannot open either php manual chm file or the mobi converted version in fbreader.
I tried to create swapfile, but no mkswap in the iliad.

Can I use mkswap from a normal linux dist like fedora on the dd'd file on the cf?

Also..been noticing memory usage..freshly started iliad shows about 18mb free. but on using mrxvt, leafpad, abiword(trying to start it), and a few other activities and finally back to only mrxvt shows up free mem to be only 2-5 mb.

any chance of memory leaks here?
I did a ps -eaf of the initial and final processes and could not find any significant diff.

I have updated busybox to 1.7.2(backed up the old bin just in case).
Then enabled swap(128mb) onto my cf card.

However still not able to use fbreader to open a big chm file like the php manual.

FBReader doesnt even attempt to open the chm file. But it asks to open the mobi converted version of the chm file, but never completes it in decent time. At Last count took at least 10 min.
Maybe my card is slow for use with swap memory.

The php manual is just a test..not something i want to use though. Smaller files are opening quite well.
