Sony PRS505 now on sale at Fred Meyer

Fred Meyer is what I consider a grocery store or supermarket - they have more food than I normally find in a Super Target or Walmart, as well as clothing, some furniture, household items, etc. I don't think of them as a department store, since their "departments" are quite limited. I think the original store is local to the Pacific Northwest, but the whole chain is owned by Kroger, which also owns other grocers.

This week, they have featured the Sony on the front page of their weekly advertisement, and the store I normally use has it in stock. At this point, only silver, and only the 505 - and the department manager didn't even know about the other colors or devices, or that there were any competitors other than the Kindle. (grump)

At $299.00, it is certainly no more expensive than many TVs or game consoles that are also sold in the same department.

In many ways, I think this is good for ebooks in general, since it really helps to see the eInk before you understand what it means. The display had the buttons available, but it was fixed and could not be picked up, so you couldn't tell how light it was.

I don't think I'd ever expect Fred Meyer to sell ebooks, but this particular store has a reasonable paper book selection.

Fred Meyer in the Spokane Valley, WA area is alright for many things and is a good grocery store. Their housewares & kitchen stuff area is quite good as well. The electronics department does have some definite surprises though. When my husband wanted a Nintendo Wii, Fred Meyer was much better supplied than any of the other stores we thought to call. I'll really glad they are now carrying the Sony PRS505 since they generally do a good job with the displays. Target here had a pathetic display the last time I was there so I will have to go see how Fred Meyer does.

Thanks for the heads-up! Every one of these in a retail store is a victory for e-books!

"Freddie May," as it is nicknamed, is quite popular in these parts, and I think this is a good and well thought-out move by Sony. I think Sony is being quite aggressive in marketing their reader.

Must be a trend. Fry's also started out as a grocery store although today they only have a good collection of candy left on the shelves.

They started in Portland, OR. Having lived in Seattle and Portland, I can tell you the ones in Portland are a lot bigger than most I've seen in the Seattle area, and there's a lot more of them. They're definitely more than just a grocery store here. Their electronics store is a decent size, but their clothing, and home and garden sections are both at least as big if not bigger as the food sections in their larger stores.

Most people don't realize it, but Fred's is the original 'One Stop Shopping' store; they've been doing it for over 80 years, much longer than Walmart. I'll have to look for the 505 next time I'm at one.

I just ordered my Sony 505 rc, from Amazon, for $273.95, plus free shipping. Can hardly wait to receive it.

I also just joined the forum and am excited to dig in to all the info I can find on this site.

I remember when Fred Meyer had a sporting goods department that sold handguns. They had a Baretta .22 pistol that I really wanted.
