Sony Reader figures: +100K in four months?

In several articles about the Sony/Google deal it was mentioned that Sony has sold 400,000 Readers. But just in December they were talking about 300,000.

I'd say it's a pretty impressive bump for four months.

What I would like to know is whether the figure is for U.S. sales only or for worldwide sales.

It's very impressive. It'd be nice to know more details about the figures.

I'm really glad I got the Sony for Christmas instead of the Kindle, despite originally wanting the Kindle. Sony just seems to be winning the ebook war for now.

E-readers are still rare to see in So Cal. In all the time I've hung at Starbucks and wherever else I've only spotted one other Sony and one Kindle (K1). Endless laptops though!

That's pretty damn impressive. I would also be interested in knowing if that's stateside only, or global sales.

Yeah, they're still too pricey to be spreading in the mainstream and avid readers area fairly small market as is--especially among the younger, Starbucks crowd. See many more people goofing on laptops, iPhones, or studying in text books than you see reading novels.

A Sony representative mentioned at Frankfurt book fair last year the number of 300 000 readers sold worldwide.

The jump to 400 000 is really impressive. Maybe its also because the reader was launched in uk and france during that time...

I've got mine last year in the US. And I bought one for my wife a few weeks ago in the UK. I'm glad that PRSs are selling well.

A few more points mentioned by TeleRead (emphasis mine):
Quote:
On related matters, Steve, under my questioning, indicated Sony’s support for the Mac and said that a Mac version of the store would be forthcoming, but he would not commit to a time frame. He also said that over 400,000 Sony Readers have been sold and that sales during this Christmas season were triple those of last Christmas. I couldn’t get Steve to give any time frame for the wireless version of the Reader, but he indicated that it was still in the works.

I'm sure retail availability is helping sales too. In a city of 25,000 I know three stores that have the PRS-505 in stock, and it's the only reader you can buy here at retail.

Sony has already lined up a service provider for the wireless version.
