"Der Pfahlmann" erschien zuerst als "Zweite Abtheilung" in dem Band "Die Rose von Kairwan". Dessen erster und dritter Teil sind "Ein Kaper" und "Eine Befreiung".

Bei allen drei Erzählungen handelt es sich um von Karl May mehr (im Fall von "Eine Befreiung" und "Der Pfahlmann") oder weniger ("Ein Kaper") bearbeitete ältere Arbeiten. Die Erstfassung von "Der Pfahlmann" trägt den Titel "Ein Dichter". Sie hat neben Änderungen im laufenden Text ein ganzes Kapitel weniger.
