The year is 1775. On the surface, Proctor Brown appears to be an ordinary young man working the family farm in New England. would I be considered an ungrateful wretch for being disappointed this story was not in epub, lrf, or html format?

I think that's kind of the point. Give the book away in a poor ebook format and hope people will pay for the reflowable text.

But he's giving us this free book in a format that gives us a poor reading experience. So a lot of people won't bother with it and such, won't then go on to purchase the other books in the series. It's a lose lose situation. Lose for the reader and lose for the author.

I've emailed the author and asked for a reflowable copy.
