Hi All,
I'm an Aussie and up until now have had a great time with my PRS500 which I bought on eBay last year as it hasn't been released out here as yet. Started having problems where it wouldn't turn off and the eBook library wouldn't open when it was connected. I have read some prospective solutions from this forum and another friend(thank you) and tried some but to no avail. Have tried the soft reset and the hard resets. With the latter, although the icon didn't turn blue nor did the all reset message appear. I tried the 'Recovery from Catastrophic Failure' by resetting 10 times and the PRS displays 'Firmware update did not complete successfully. Please try again'. Now when I connect to the computer the PRS display changes to 'Updating firmware' and then Explorer open sshowing the PRS as Drive F and a file named Protected!! with 0 Bytes and File Type 'File' is listed. The eBook library now opens but the PRS shows as Error. I read a second post on hard reset which said in part to Log into the Sony store and goto Account/Manage Devices and authorise the device to my account, but this only authorised my PC and not the PRS. Any Ideas? Would be grateful for any assistance. Sue |

Sue, The first thing I'd try is to completely recharge the battery. Use the AC charger since the USB will not charge if the battery is nearly or completely discharged.
One of the peculiarities of eink is that the display still shows when the battery is flat or nearly so. You can still get some "apparent activity" with an extremely low battery but there may not be enough charge to effectively do something. This has happened to me and it is confusing. Hope this helps. P.S. It could be that the battery has gone bad and will not take a proper charge. If so you'll have to have it replaced. Oh, and welcome to MR. |

It says to be able to add a computer(I think it also means a device) you must first be logged on to that computer. I am logged onto my PC with the PRS500 connected. Seems to be saying there isn't a connection through to the PRS500. From memory when I initially accessed 'Manage Devices' it automatically added my PC. Will keep on trying. Regards SueK |

I have been charging it on the AC charger and when charged the red light turns off but the charged symbol doesn't show on the screen I'm guessing because I have cleaned the firmware off. Am currently re-charging and will give it amother go. All, please excuse if I don't get the reply protocols correct wrt karma etc but am still learning the system. Thanks SueK |
