All of these decisions...
I am looking for a general purpose, "recreational" device. IOW, .pdf compatability is not a major problem. Content availability is important. Also, highlighting/annotation/dictionary are important. The iLiad Book REALLY intrugues me due to its size. The big models are TOO big for me (convenience), but I think that the intermediate size of the Book might be helpful for me (limited vision). Of course, there is the $600 price. Whadda ya think---especially on the size of the iLiad as it relates to readability. Thanks in advance to any and all, AuPhinger |

The CyBook would also meet the above, but in the US I feel the Kindle is the better choice. BOb |

Due to your limited vision I would say find a device that allows for multiple font sizes. The Kindle and Cybook are good candidates.

The Cybook may be a better choice than the Kindle for a 6" device. The Kindle has one font and 6 font sizes, see Font Sizes. The Cybook has more sizes, and a larger maximum size, and you can change the font - see Does the new CyBook support ultra-large fonts. The same thread (post #13) includes a screenshot of the iLiad, which shows a larger font still. With the iLiad you also have the option of FBReader, which has even larger font options and better hypenation (good for large fonts on a small screen), see also Things you can do with your iLiad. Note that screenshots will likely appear larger on a PC screen, because most don't have 160-167 ppi like the EInk devices. Printing on paper at the actual screen size is the best guide.
I think the iLiad Book Edition maybe your best option but it is expensive, and the Cybook may be "good enough". You can buy the Cybook from Books on Board in the US. I really like my iLiad for reading around the house. It is possible to use it when traveling, but the 6" devices are more convenient because of size and also battery life. The iLiad's page turn is slower than other devices, but its screen is larger so this probably comes out even. Last edited by wallcraft; 02-09-2009 at 11:42 PM. Reason: added iLiad impressions |

My favorite device to simply read on is the Cybook, primarily due to the extra font sizes and the fact that I can read in the font of my choice. Sounds like this would be an important factor for you. It's also smaller, lighter and I find it a bit more comfortable for one-handed use. I also have a Kindle, which is a fine choice as well. It's keyboard provides searching and annotation features that the Cybook doesn't have, which may or may not be important to you. If you read a lot of current books the ebook pricing is better through Amazon (and you can buy content directly through the device). The one font it has is quite readable, and can be made quite large, but the options are more limited than the Cybook in the font/sizing area. Last edited by bwaldron; 02-09-2009 at 11:53 PM. |

I agree with the suggestion of the CyBook. It has the best implementation of the MobiPocket Reader of any eInk device.
The Mobi Reader on the iLiad is very poor. Unless you want to display PDFs, I'd give the iLiad a miss. |

Never iLiad!
I am totally disappointed with my new iLiad book edition! I bought it before Cristmas and now it is dead! When switched on it shows initial screen fills in the white progress bar and stops with green power led on! That is all! After Reset the same! Beside that there is no normal mini USB connector, instead proprietary socket with ugly box which I have to carry along just to be able to recharge this crippled slate! Taking in account its short battery life it is almost not usable! I deply regret my decision to by this device! I wish I had red this newsgroup before! |

I would suggest the Kindle, mainly because it is easy to use. The font size options are good, and the keyboard/search feature is useful.
