New in town

Well...my computer just ate my very first message. Grrrr....

Hi, all!

I'm an author in search of help finding an e-home for my backlist as well as new works NY is too wussy to publish. (Actually, the simple economic fact is, the change in the market is killing most of us midlisters.) At the moment, I'm dumber than dirt, but hoping to change that quickly. (Don't worry, I'm headed for the newbies forum ASAP)

I'm thrilled to discover this forum. You seem a very knowledgeable bunch.

Lessee...about me. I write big thick SF/F books. I'm also CJ Cherryh's (another author) business partner and first editor. My web site s/b listed, but it's woefully neglected. That's going to change soon.

When I'm not writing, I like music (play piano and guitar and sing ... all so-so) I paint, sculpt, have a salt water fishtank and am putting in (by hand) a 4000 gallon koi pond in my back yard. Hopefully, when the snow melts, we'll fire her up! Keep you virtual fingers crossed for me. Oh, I also figure skate several days a week.

I have a cat, Efanor, and we share the house with CJ and her cat Ysabel.

And that's more than enough about me. Looking forward to getting to know all of you and thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum Jane. CJ is one of my favorite authors. I love her Chanur series. She could probably help you with things getting started. She publishes on Baen which is a good place for ebook SF/F. You might try to get something on their free library to get more reader recognition. (Or maybe put something here on MR.)

A pleasure to meet you. I have been a fan of CJ's for more years than she probably would care to hear about. I've read many of her works and the Chanur series is one of my favorites. I'll definitely put your name on my list.

I wish you well in your endeavor to bring your works to electronic format.

Welcome to Mobile Read Jane!

Warning! This place is addictive.

It's nice to have authors participate as we (at least me) are introduced to new authors to read. I've already done the search thing for you and CJ.... so along with the previous post recommendations I know how I am going to spend my book store gift card.

Everyone is very helpful here so just ask and someone will pop up and answer and / or point you to the thread with information....

Heh heh...I'm asking for her, too. We're investigating this arena as much for her reverted backlist as for my faltering career. I got started at just the wrong time for complex novels. Got two good series started, then NY began to go nuts. Thanks goodness for you guys!

Actually, I'm thinking of testing the whole ebook format with my first series, which I've rewritten to accomodate a prequel. I'm planning on making the original version free, so I'd love to get feedback from you all after I've made the files to know how they work on various readers and what I can do to make it look more "professional."

Thanks!

Me, too. I was in college and working in a University book store when Gate of Ivrel (her first published novel) came out. Been a big fan ever since. I became her alpha reader with Cyteen. We were working together on a graphic adaptation of Gate at that time. When the graphic novel company went belly up, she suggested I try writing. Been doing that ever since.

One thing I hope to do with the ebook format is finish the graphic. I only got the first two of six published before Donning went bust. I'd love to make the graphics available on ebooks, but honestly, the way I color doesn't translate very well to b/w. I think pdfs would be the only way to go. I might actually do that and make them free in the hopes of selling the graphics I have in my basement. But the rest could be done b/w manga style, which would work with the electronic paper.

I don't think anything other than one of the Chanur books is available in eformat yet. Most of our active backlist is with DAW, and they haven't yet joined the 21st C. I hope this little foray of mine will help gig them into it.

Just an FYI: I'm planning to make my original Groundties (now 'Netwalkers) series into ebooks for free within the next couple of months. Will post them here first so you guys can critique the formatting for me. (Can't change them, 'cuz they're already copyrighted...although...hmmm...any typos could be fixed, couldn't they? YAYAYAYAY I have one planet that they put in as plant. Really makes for a weird image....)

I can't say enough how glad I am to have found this forum.

Actually there are 30 at Fictionwise. The first 4 of the Chanur series, all of the Faded Sun Trilogy & more. Seem to be mainly in Adobe, Microsoft reader, ereader & Mobipocket formats but not every one is in all of these formats.

I'm really thrilled to see you say this. These books sound like just what I'd like to read. I know Jeffrey Carver brought his first three books in his Chaos Chronicles to eBook format and it's brought him new readers for the newest book in the series which was recently released. Jeffrey was giving away his books at his website and several folks asked how they could pay for them, so he set up a "tip jar" using PayPal. I don't know how lucrative that has been, but he's certainly gotten more than he would have without the tip jar. Recently, Jeffrey uploaded his books to our distribution server as well.

While there are many people who love getting something for free, you'll find that there are also many who feel that authors should be properly compensated for their writings. Make it easy for people to read the books and then pay if they enjoy them and you may be surprised to see what comes of it. Also, if you need help getting your book into the various e-Book formats, just ask. There are some very skilled people here who make beautiful books within the constraints of the individual formats.
