Hello from Chicago western suburbs

I have been considering "looking into" these things for quite some time, and came across the forum a short while ago. Invaluable information here, Thanks to All!!

I have some vision limitations, so that will be an issue as I look, hem and haw...readiability will be a major issue. I already scan some things to .pdf, or scan and run through character recognition, for the ability to enlarge, etc.

Ah well! Lots to learn, many challenges. ¡Thanks for having this Foro!

Hello and welcome GoldFinger

Many of the ebook devices out (if not all) have zooming capabilities (although there are some limitations with that when reading PDFs. What have you been considering?

Hi AuPhinger

You've come to the right place to help you decide. This forum has lots of information about what the various devices can do. Just visit the different threads and see what others say.

I have a Sony 505 and love it!

Let us know what you like to read...

Welcome, AuPhinger (or should I just say Gold Finger?). The Cybook Gen3 has the best initial set of font sizes but I like my EZ Reader (basically a Hanlin V3) now that I loaded the OpenInkPot firmware - it gives me even a greater set of font sizes. However they all offer some set of font sizes which is better than paper books (especially for my old eyes).

Thanks to all who have replied. I have spent a lot of time here today; I tend to research things a lot, so this site offers me a LOT! And I just found the Wiki pages...

What do I read? A bit of everything. I am retired, but have taken some college courses recently, so even textbooks come in to play. In fact, I purchased an e version of a textbook for last fall; used it on the computer. Beyond that, I read a great variety, from current best sellers to historical novels, on and on...

Some of my bigger questions are: I think most models have variable size fonts---saw in one demo where as the font size reached a certain level, the view switched to landscape. I thought this was a VERY nice touch. Dictionary use would be very nice----most especially if multiple dictionaries could be used, such as Spanish-English, etc. I speak fair Spanish, but reading is slow for me due to dictionary use. And, of course, that would require a touch-screen to be useful.

So, I appreciate any and all comments, and will keep looking and, as they arise, asking questions.

Thanks Again to All,
AuPhinger

Well, hi there!! I missed seeing your notice, when you first got here -- but I guess that was pretty recently.

I'm in Aurora -- just a tad bit south of you. Have you visited a Borders Bookstore? Some (all?) of them have the Sony reader on display, so you can touch it, see it.

I personally LOVE the Kindle (I just ordered a Kindle 2 and I already own the Kindle 1). The Kindle isn't shown in any storefront (sold at amazon.com) BUT I could arrange to meet you and show you mine, since you are so close.

Enjoy the wealth of info you'll find here!

Hello, Deb...or at least I guess that is part of your name!

I had started to go into Woodfield Mall a while back to the Sony store, but never got around to it. Then I did see that Borders have the Sonys. I went to Borders in Geneva to take a look. I did see readers, but did not find anyone there who knew anything about them. Oh well, at least I saw (and held) them. The slimness (new word??) is amazing, isn't it!

I am in line for a K-2, supposedly shipping on 02-24. Let's see how they (Amazon) handle their shipping priorities. In fact, this will be interesting to watch as it unfolds. I ordered my K-2 on 02-09, if I remember correctly.

And then I fell into a Sony 500, "nearly new" on eBay for $142.50. It should be here in the next day or two, which gives me time to check it out and still cancel the K-2 if I choose to. However, I suspect I will keep both, as I am a sucker for toys. And from all the reading I have done, these two readers usually come out on top, with a significant gap between the two on compatability.

Anyway, Thanks for the welcome, and will be seeing you around. I had NO IDEA "reading" was going to be so much work!!

Yup - Deb it is. badxxxxx was my maiden name, and goodxxxxx I married into (though I actually kept my maiden name). But I liked the Bad to Good connotation!

Have you found the "Ebooks" available on THIS forum? Blue line near top of page. Choose "mobipocket" type for the Kindle, and .... um, something else for the Sony. You download the free books to your computer, and later push them to the reader via a USB cable. I bet you'll love both devices. One can never have too many fun toys!

Hello auPhinger -- welcome to MobileRead. Like Deb, I seem to have missed your first introduction. As an owner of both a Kindle and a Sony, I'll have to say that you've made some good decisions. Both devices are good. If it's a PRS-500 that you've bought rather than a PRS-505, there are some differences in the one you have and the one that I bought -- but not many.

Most of the books here at MobileRead are available in both MobiPocket format (for the Kindle) and BBeB format (for the Sony). And, as you've discovered, there's a wealth of information should you have questions about either reader.

We're glad you've found us.
