Talking [Plugin] APIKOmic Reader: plugin to search, read and download manga & comics

I wanted to read manga on my Kindle without downloading stuff on my PC and copying it over every single time. Then I found out MangaDex has an open API, so one thing led to another and I ended up making a plugin for it: APIKOmicReader (APIKO for short)

You open it from the Tools menu, search, tap a cover and read. That's it. No PC involved.

What it does:
  • - Sites: MangaDex (manga, lots of languages) and the Internet Archive (Western comics, only uploads that actually have CBZ/CBR files, so you skip most of the junk). You can also add you own sources, refer to the README.
  • Home screen with a search bar, site picker and tiles for everything else.
  • Results as a grid with covers, a list with covers or a plain list.
  • Chapter lists, plus "download all" and "download a range" for whole series.
  • Library for stuff you want to keep, History for what you read lately, Bookmarks for later, and saved searches.
  • Comics are kept in a hidden folder, so they don't get mixed up with your books or show up in KOReader's history.
  • Parental controls: adult content is hidden by default. Long-press the logo to show it (the logo blushes, I couldn't help myself), and you can lock it behind a PIN.
  • Turns on Panels+ automatically when you open a comic, if you have it installed.
  • Comes with its own icon for the ZenOS launcher.
  • Adding a site is one Lua file dropped in a folder. There's a template, so if you know of another site with an open API, have a go and send a PR!

I've been testing it on a Kindle 11th gen. It should work on anything that runs KOReader, but I'd love to hear how it goes on Kobo, PocketBook, Android and others.

Install: grab the release, copy APIKOmicReader.koplugin into koreader/plugins/ and restart KOReader. On Windows there's also a small installer that copies it over USB for you.

It's v1.0, so there will be bugs. If something breaks, the lines starting with APIKOmic: in crash.log help a lot. Feedback, ideas and new sources are very welcome!

I'm working on paralel page downloads, library sorting, queue downloads and keep device on while downloading, so stay alert!
