Chinese e-book formats (CAJ, PDG, CEBX): Does anyone still use them?

Hello everyone!

I'm a member of a software development team with a strong interest in e-book formats and cross-platform reading.

I've been looking into several e-book and document formats that originated in China, and I'd be very interested to hear about other readers' experiences with them.

Some examples include:

- **CAJ, KDH, NH** — commonly associated with CNKI academic papers and publications.
- **PDG, PDZ** — used by SuperStar (Chaoxing) digital libraries, particularly for scanned books.
- **CEB, CEBX** — associated with Founder Apabi's digital publishing system.
- **UMD** — an older format once popular for mobile e-books in China.

Unlike EPUB and PDF, these formats often seem to depend on specialized reading software.

I have a few questions for the community:

1. **Have you ever encountered any of these formats?** If so, which ones, and where did you come across them?

2. **What software do you use to open them?** For example, CAJViewer, SSReader, Apabi Reader, or something else? How well do these programs work?

3. **Would you prefer to open these files directly in a general-purpose reader, or convert them to PDF or EPUB first?**

4. **Have you experienced problems with conversion?** For example, missing pages, incorrect formatting, poor image quality, lost bookmarks, or problems with text extraction.

5. **Would you find it useful if a cross-platform reader could handle these formats alongside EPUB, PDF, and other common document types?** Or do you think these formats are too specialized to matter outside China?

I'm particularly interested in whether researchers, students, people studying Chinese literature, or collectors of older digital books still encounter these files.

I'd also love to hear about any software that handles these formats especially well.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and opinions!
