“The Winged Bull” is a tale of magic and sexuality, mystery, and self discovery. It focuses on Ursula Brandwyn, who had been harmed by her involvement in an unscrupulous occult group.

Down on his luck, Ted Murchison invokes the Winged Bull, a god of ancient Babylon, to come to his aid. Immediately, he is drawn into a vortex of weird events in which he is asked to rescue Ursula, the sister of an old friend, from the clutches of a black magician, Hugo Astley (a thinly veiled portrait of Aleister Crowley). Murchison must brave the horrors of the dark lodge, put his own life on the line, and weaponize the clean, ancient forces of nature to break Astley's hold over Ursula's subconscious forever.

Dion Fortune (born Violet Mary Firth, 1890 – 1946) is considered one of the most significant occultists and ceremonial magicians of the early 20th century. She was a co-founder of occult organization the Fraternity of the Inner Light; this organization in later decades spawned a variety of related groups based upon her teachings.

A prolific writer, she produced a large number of articles and books on her occult ideas. Her novels in particular proved an influence on later occult and modern Pagan groups such as Wicca. Literary scholar Susan Johnson Graf categorises these novels alongside the work of H. Rider Haggard, Algernon Blackwood, Charles Williams, and Arthur Machen.

Unlike older Gothic horror stories, Fortune intentionally places her fictional magical workings in a mundane, domestic setting (like preparing meals or managing household life in Bloomsbury) to show that spiritual work must be grounded in everyday reality.
