Dion Fortune’s first novel explores the dangers of corrupt magic and selfish spiritual power.

Veronica Mainwaring is a young woman who is innocently plunged into a world of occult intrigue and danger. She becomes the secretary of malevolent magician Justin Lucas, who exploits her psychic abilities to further his own ambitions. Lucas’ betrayal of his secret occult fraternity and abuse of magic recoil upon him: he faces punishment and appears to die, but instead enters a vampiric half-life, feeding on Veronica's vital energy.

Dion Fortune (born Violet Mary Firth, 1890 – 1946) is considered one of the most significant occultists and ceremonial magicians of the early 20th century. She was a co-founder of occult organization the Fraternity of the Inner Light; this organization in later decades spawned a variety of related groups based upon her teachings.

A prolific writer, she produced a large number of articles and books on her occult ideas. Her novels in particular proved an influence on later occult and modern Pagan groups such as Wicca. Literary scholar Susan Johnson Graf categorises these novels alongside the work of H. Rider Haggard, Algernon Blackwood, Charles Williams, and Arthur Machen.

Unlike older Gothic horror stories, Fortune intentionally places her fictional magical workings in a mundane, domestic setting (like preparing meals or managing household life in Bloomsbury) to show that spiritual work must be grounded in everyday reality.
