Simon & Schuster is embracing indie authors. Mosty I'd like to see them use it to break Amazon's exclusivity with indies.

Pocket Books Relaunched as Home for Self-Published Authors

Simon & Schuster will relaunch its Pocket Books imprint, tapping Anh Schluep as VP, editorial director, and deputy publisher... Schluep moves to Pocket from Amazon Publishing, where she was associate publisher of the Montlake, Skyscape, and 47 North imprints...

The reimagined imprint will not release books in the old mass market format, but will rather focus on signing self-published authors to print deals.

According to Bergstrom, Schluep’s new mission is to rebrand Pocket “as a home for forward-thinking writers, including bestselling indie and hybrid authors looking to amplify their reach” using S&S’s strengths in marketing, publicity, and print distribution.

Simon & Schuster UK and International has launched Simon Stream, a digital-focused fiction imprint aimed at self-published authors who want to make the switch to traditional publishing.

Pepe said in the announcement that Simon Stream aims to offer authors “the best parts of both [self- and traditional] publishing models,” specifically with an eye to royalty rates. Simon Stream offers 50% net royalties on e-book sales, while a typical e-book royalty rate for traditional publishers hovers around 25%.

Simon & Schuster distribute the Aethon Vault pbooks for indie publisher Aethon. I wonder if they've noticed how they're doing.

Many hybrid publishing offers also start at a 50% royalty rate."

Yeah, they will offer 50% right up until they get a lot of takers then they will drop it down to 25%.

They just realize they are letting a lot of money slide through their greedy little hands and now they want a piece of the action since they now realize that self published authors are managing to survive without them.

I hope they don't get many takers!
