TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus ?
I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with a TCL NXTPAPER 11 Plus. I read my Elipsa 2E at night in bed and am happy with it but the idea that there may be a device that would read as well (maybe sharper as I think that the TCL has a higher DPI) plus have the added ability to go on line for lightweight tasks appeals to me.
My concerns are that because this is not a true e-paper device that the reading in bed at night may be harder on the eyes. Has anyone here spent any time with one of these devices? How did you like it? |

The "plus" models are not worth the extra over "regular" models for most applications including reading.
The Nxtpaper11 & 14 are fine for reading at night (I have both & Sage etc) if in sRGB mode and manual brightness (about 9% to 18%). Adjust to same brightness as a paperback book or Ink with light off, or if there is no ambient light, just whatever is comfortable, same as eink with front light on. I read novels on original Libra or Sage and illustrated or PDF content on the Nxtpaper 11 or 14. |

The Nxtpaper 11 is about 16 million shades so any text looks far better. I've compared them, also with a similar size iPad and a reMarkable side by side. The Sage is best, but only if ambient light allows the front light off. Otherwise the Nxtpaper 11 is far better (sRGB mode and manual brightness & colour balance). |

Do you find the nighttime reading experience better with the TCL? |

The TCL regular Nxtpaper 11 & 14 I have is very similar for mono to the Sage and better than the Elipsa, if the frontlight is on on the eink.
The Sage is better in ambient light (only for mono text) than either Nxtpaper when frontlight isn't needed, but even with no light (good ambient light) either Nxtpaper, or the Nxtpapet 50 or 60 phones (also here) is better than the reMarkable or Elipsa. |

If there was any tablet with aspect of 3:4, 4:5 rather than 10:16 or 9:16 (worst) and about 8″ with at least volume buttons (able to be page turn) and a screen like the Nxtpaper (I think maybe two other companies have screens nearly as good), I'd buy it as a colour alternative to the Sage. Not Kaledio Colour eInk as it's too dark and not Gallery Colour eInk as it's far too slow, even if the resolution issue was solved (very bad on Kaledio).
The 9.7″ and larger are all to heavy to read for a long period of time, like 4 hours. Edit There are now displays even worse aspect than 16:9 (9:16 on portrait). Possibly acceptable for a phone as long as shorter ones are still an option. Last edited by Quoth; 08-28-2026 at 05:20 AM. |

I really wonder what this ominous "eyestrain" really is. I haven't experienced any eye problems with any screen. Although I prefer screens with no or minimal reflections. But that's just due to the fact that I can concentrate better on what the screen shows without being distracted by reflections.
I have a few devices with a matte screen (NXTPAPER, Lenovo, Huawei), they all look rather similar to my eyes. The NXTPAPER button doesn't work anymore on one of my TCL devices, when I use it I can choose on of the modes and then...nothing happens. The modes can't even be changed in the settings. TCL was not helpful when contacting them. |

Brightness too high.
Reading with a bright reflection. Unconscious re-focusing on the reflection, especially caused by moving screen or object known nearly 50 years to cause headaches due to eyestrain. Needing reading glasses. Too small font. Poor contrast. Nxtpaper is not unique, though done well. TCL stupidly hypes the "eink simulation modes" and also the default settings which is all actually worst than sRGB, manual brightness, a sane theme and adjusting colour balance to match ambient. The "blue light" strain or keep you awake claims are largely myth. Stimulation and brightness keeps you awake! |
