You're probably best off gzipping it. (No container clutter after decompress.)
Lately, every request for almost any change gets a reply that the code is too old and brittle and no one is left willing to try changing it. |

Your solution is perfectly OK, but note that gzip does absolutley nothing beyond compress (which, of course, includes a bit of metadata to identify that it is a gzip compressed file), and gunzip returns the bit identical input file and deletes the archive by default (the -k option keeps the archive after decompression) .
