I’m troubleshooting a Kobo Clara BW (2024) and would appreciate any advice.
Symptoms: * The screen is completely white (blank). * The PC does not detect the device (tried different cables and ports). * When connected to a charger, pressing the power button briefly turns the white LED on once, then it goes off. * Holding the power button for about 60 seconds causes the white LED to flash around 10 times, then stop. The screen remains white. * No recovery screen appears, and the manual factory reset doesn’t seem to work. Background: The device belongs to a customer. I was told the issue started after installing/configuring KOReader and performing a reboot. I don’t know exactly how KOReader was installed (NickelMenu, KFMon, etc.). Before opening the device, I’d like to know: * Has anyone seen this exact behavior on a Kobo Clara BW? * Could this be a corrupted bootloader or firmware, or is it more likely an eMMC/hardware issue? * Is there any recovery method or forced recovery mode that doesn’t require opening the device? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

First question is if this is a P365 or N365. The P365 manufactured by TPV had quite a few issues which, I suspect, is why Kobo went back to Netronix for the next manufacturing batch (the N365). The basic bootloader is part of the CPU's firmware and unlikely to have corrupted. I'd tend to be more suspicious of the eMMC and incompatible software that has corrupted it's structure.
As far as I know, the plug into power for at least one hour and leave plugged in, hold down the power button for 30 seconds to force a power off regardless of the what the screen says, let go of the power button for a couple of seconds, press and hold the power button until the LED starts blinking rapidly and the manual factory reset starts is the only recovery method normally accessible. If your computer beeps a connect/disconnect tone when you power the Clara BW on, you can try using a ADB connection which is fun to get the timing right on. |
