Searching for 6"-7" E-Reader with Buttons: Best for Annotations, Translation & KORead

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking for a new 6-inch or 7-inch e-reader with physical page-turn buttons and would love to get some advice and input from the community. I have a technical background, prefer an offline-first data approach, and place high value on a clean, structured workflow for notes, annotations, and exports.

Context & Background:
I am based in Germany and recently got back into reading after a long break. My first book back was Hermann Hesse’s Demian, where I encountered complex philosophical passages and vocabulary I wasn't familiar with. I also frequently read psychological literature to better understand and reflect on my personal health.

Because of this, I am looking for a portable e-reader that makes it easy to:
1. Highlight and save meaningful passages/quotes to review and reflect on later in detail.
2. Look up unknown words and translate sentences seamlessly while reading.

Key Requirements:
• Hardware & Ergonomics: 6" or 7" screen, with physical page-turn buttons being a must (or at least highly desirable on ultra-compact devices).

• Highlighting & Export: Straightforward marking, saving, and exporting of quotes (ideally structured for Calibre or Markdown/Obsidian).

•Translation & Dictionary: Instant lookup and translation of individual words or phrases.

• Philosophical Context / Explanations: Ability to get deeper explanations for complex sentences (via KOReader plugins, AI tools, or Android apps).

• File Management: Offline-first mindset, tightly integrated with Calibre.

• Tinkering: Open to custom menus, tweaks, or alternative reading software (like KOReader).

Current Contenders:

Kobo Libra Colour
- Pros: Excellent ergonomics, IPX8 waterproofing, physical buttons, color screen for highlights/covers, great KOReader support (including potential AI/translation plugins directly on-device).

- Cons/Doubts: The Kaleido 3 layer makes the black-and-white background slightly darker (requires more front light), no native Android apps.

Onyx Boox Go 7 (or Go Color 7)

- Pros: Open Android system (direct installation of apps like DeepL, ChatGPT, Obsidian), solid hardware, physical buttons, microSD slot.

- Cons/Doubts: Higher standby battery drain due to Android, potential overhead/complexity for a pure reading workflow.

BOOX Go 6 (Gen 2)

- Pros: Very compact (6"), crisp black-and-white screen, full support for the BOOX InkSense stylus, open Android for notes and apps.

- Cons/Doubts: No physical page buttons (touchscreen only), smaller screen real estate for larger layouts or PDFs.

PocketBook Era (or Era Color)

- Pros: Premium build quality (metal frame), excellent Carta 1200 B&W screen (or Color version), 4 physical buttons, outstanding KOReader integration for structured Markdown exports (.md).

- Cons/Doubts: Noticeably heavier, no active stylus support, Linux-based (no native Android apps).

Musnap Ocean C

- Pros: Ultra-thin design with faux-leather back, physical buttons, Android 14 for maximum app flexibility.

- Cons/Doubts: Difficult availability and expensive import/shipping to Europe, lack of local EU customer support.

Hanvon Clear 7 Turbo+

- Pros: Ergonomic Oasis-style design with side grip and buttons, fast Android 14, E-Ink Carta 1300 for crisp B&W contrast.

- Cons/Doubts: Import-only, requires manual setup/tinkering for Western workflows.

Tolino Vision Color

- Pros: Hardware-identical twin to the Kobo Libra Colour (buttons, ergonomics, color, stylus support), widely available locally in Germany.

- Cons/Doubts: Stock software is much more restricted than Kobo (installing KOReader is significantly harder), same darker Kaleido 3 background.

Given my location in Germany (regarding availability and warranty) and my focus on a clean annotation/translation workflow, which device or ecosystem would you recommend? I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

I have nothing to comment re: your workflow (I don’t annotate), but just wanted to mention that the Musnap Ocean and Ocean C are very much available on Amazon.de so “Difficult availability and expensive import/shipping to Europe” may not be a significant con.

Whether it’s a better or more reasonable choice than Boox Go 7 for a similar-ish price is another matter, especially re: potential customer support.

(As far as I can tell, Boox sucks when it comes to hardware problems - not just broken screens but anything they can even remotely go “user caused” about - but at least they can be contacted and they do offer repairs for their devices, albeit not cheap, and can offer genuine assistance when it comes to software/firmware issues. I’ve no idea how Musnap compares there or how easy they’d be to contact directly for service if needed.)

Thanks a lot for the heads-up! The fact that the Musnap Ocean and Ocean C are now directly available on Amazon.de takes the import hassle and expensive shipping completely out of the equation!

Your assessment regarding customer support is also extremely helpful. I've read quite a bit about Boox's hurdles when it comes to hardware repairs and screen damage, even if their software support seems fairly decent. Buying the Musnap via Amazon provides a solid safety net, at least for the return window, even though long-term support and firmware updates from Musnap naturally remain a bit of a question mark.
