Why do people come here, ask a question and then bugger off?

Why is it that some people come here, ask a question and then don't return? What's the point of asking for help if you don't come back to see if there are any answers?

You don't need to log back in to check for answers to your question.

Also, I'm pretty sure some people post their question in several different forums and websites, and they might not remember to check them all for answers.

Some people come to spam.
Some people don't give a crap.
Some people are here to promote and then disappear.
Some people are thoughtless.
Some people are selfish.
Some people weren't raised to respect other people.
Some people like to use other people.
Some people want other people to do all the work for them.
Some people are mean buggers.
Some people are looking for a Kobo image.
Some people....

MOST PEOPLE ARE THOUGHTFUL AND CONSIDERATE, AND CARE ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE: THEY'VE LEARNED HOW TO SAY 'THANK YOU' WHEN HELPED. THEY READ THE POSTING GUIDELINES AND WANT TO BE HELPFUL AND PARTICIPATE IN A FORUM SO THEY CAN BE A PART OF A COMMUNITY THEY IDENTIFY WITH.

The other thing some people do is they ask a question and then later come back and say they found a solution but they don't say what the solution was. So anyone with the same problem doesn't have the answer.

People are different. Period. It's a mistake to believe that people who don't come back and feed your (that's a rhetorical you, just to be clear) ego with obsequious praise just for answering a question on a online forum "ain't had no fetchin' up."

Communities always have loners, outliers, outcasts and inbetweeners. Online or otherwise.

For the most part, I find a majority of the people whom I help with a Kobo image say thank you. Those who manage to revive their Kobos using an image will also often let me know that they were successful and what if any issues they ran into.

The only real issue is having to widen the doorways to allow my ego to fit through.

I put my sig up years ago because I believe you don't learn anything unless you put in some effort.
I am glad to point you in the (hopefully) correct direction.
I am willing to toss ideas into the pot (and grab some ).
A simple TNX is fine.
I also agree a fixed, when multiple suggestions were offered, helps none that come later .

There have been times when I've asked what the solution was so others can see it.

It is nice to know the problems was solved and what the solution is even if it's not my suggestion that fixed it.

I mainly meant the "read the posting guidelines" part. Pretty sure most people don't do that.

I have to agree that a lot of people never read those guidelines. You mean I shouldn't post the same message in 5 random forums, only one of which might have a connection to my problem?

The funniest terms and conditions I read was one where one website included as the last item that you were agreeing to ship your first born child to them if you violated any of the terms and conditions. When I mentioned this, I was told that out of ~12,000 people who clicked on the read and agree button, I was the 9th who had asked about that condition. Basically, included just to see if anyone read that far and it fitted the warped sense of humour of the website operator.

Well, first of all you really have to violate the terms & conditions and then there are so many gay men who try hard with many, many other men (tntc like they say in microbiology when counting bacteria colonies [too numerous to count]) to, er, reproduce and a first born child just doesn't happen (don't ask why I know this, I just know it)...so I assume that part applies to only a tiny fraction, depending on the forum's main topic of course.

As already mentioned everyone can read the answers here without being logged in. But if one's not logged in one only see the daily posts. That may mean you may miss if someone answered your question and you only check the list of posts here every other day, especially if you deactivated the option to be notified via email like I did. I usually check the list of new posts, but not every day, and only log in when I have the urge to write an answer, like right now. Then I usually stay logged in until I close my browser to update it or until it crashes.

And don't forget there are always answers in forums that question why a person wants to do this when to do that is a much better option and answers that are rather off topic which produce more answers that are much more off topic et cetera. Some people may be put off by this.

Well, I have no children, so I couldn't be bothered to ask about this. I'm sure there were other childless people among those clickers.
