Similar named books in Calibre

How do you handle similar named (but totally different) books in Calibre so one doesn't overwrite the other. A couple of times now I've been adding books and I get the similar books warning and I either have to let the new book overwrite the old one or not load the new book.

Eh? Where do you get the option to overwrite or cancel? When I add a book with a similar title, I get the option to add or cancel, and adding doesn't overwrite existing books.

Sorry, bad explanation on my part.
It will only allow me to add one or the other to my Kobo. Can't remember exactly what I checked or unchecked on the pop up but it ended up keeping the duplicate name but changing the actual book so the wrong book ended up in the series I had made.
I can't remember what book it was now, if it comes to me I'll post a couple of screen shots.

If the title and author are exactly the same, then yes, the previous book might get overwritten. You'll have to change the title in that case (like Shadow Vol I, Shadow Vol II etc.)

So to check that I understand your issue, when you send ebooks to your Kobo from calibre, sending books with identical titles & authors results in only one copy surviving on your Kobo? You are going to have to add something to the title and/or author so your Kobo can tell the difference. Having duplicate titles/authors in your calibre library is probably a bad idea in any case.

or you can change the send to device template and add {id} to it so all filenames are unique

And if it is the same title and author, then it's the same book.

I have 4 copies of The Odyssey by Homer. I added the translator to the author list and the original year of publication to the title.

Not necessarily. I've some series books with the same title and of course the same author. Obviously there should have been Part 1, Part 2 etc added to the title, but there wasn't, so I had to add them myself.

Did it again with another couple of unrelated books. Apparently the description in the actual EPUB was exactly the same. The file name was different XXXX.epub but the contents were named identical (for lack of a better description).

This is why I leave Otto (Airplane the Movie reference ) out of the Metadata download.
Every one gets my eyeball before I accept, because so many come up wrong these days. (having THE ISBN or the actual ASIN reduces this error) Some of this is because the official sources of this has frequently become blocked and a lesser places become the only responses.

Here's a couple screenshots, first the warning and then the duplicate book that already is in Calibre.
They both have the same name but obviously different authors. I first assumed the contents of the .epub were wonky but they both have the correct contents as to naming.
How would I change it to use authors as a second sort where I can't get the second into Calibre without overwriting the first.
Sorry for the my confusion and the bad description on my first post.
Adding something different such as a a 1 or2 at the end of the filename does nothing
**EDIT**
Got it, I was making things a lot more complicated than I had to. I changed the name of the book already in Calibre by adding a 1 to the end.

When adding books to calibre, the title is the only criteria for duplicates. Since the book is already selected, you should be able to click ok and the book will be added in it's own entry.
