Replacing my Inkpad 4

Hi!

Didn't post in a long time, although i am an old-timer here. My journey with ebook readers included:
Rocket Ebook
Sony PRS-505
Pocketbook 360
...
...
Inkpad 4
XTEINK V3

i do like my Inkpad 4 from a hardware perspective, it's a great piece of tech. But the software is ... well, mediocre.

I really liked the Kobo Sage, but couldn't live with the battery life.
I don't care much about display options, all my books are being worked on in calibre (stripped of all unnecessary things and adapted to my style)

So here are my must haves:
- at least 7"
- warm front light (good quality)
- modern eink display
- no color
- usable as left handed
- shelf support through calibre
- series support through calibre
- filtering options (Pocketbook cannot hide read books!)
- only needs epub support, i dont care about pdf's
- Instapaper support

Nice to have:
- reading statistics

I might go with the BooX Go 7, but i am not sure, how good the library functionality is.
Is it working well with series? Does it support shelves? can i filter read books, by start date, etc. Does it support Instapaper? How much of a difference is between 7" and 8"

I'd like to know all this about the Boox Go 7 too, plus: is there a difference in battery life between the Boox and Pocketbook/Kobo because Boox uses Android instead of Linux for the OS?

The native NeoReader is a very nice reader app (IMHO) for DRM-free books, but it doesn’t recognise metadata beyond author & title or really offer any automatic sort/filter options. You can create bookshelves as well as folders and sort manually, and I think a recent Onyx post on Reddit mentioned that the newest firmware update introduces the series feature for NeoReader but as it’s not become available for my devices yet, I have no idea about how that works.

That said, it’s Android, so you don’t have to use the native reader - if there’s an Android reading app that provides the features you want, you can easily use whatever you prefer. (Installing Koreader is also very simple.)

Re: battery life that was asked about - I haven’t had or used a Kobo, but on my Boox Go 7 Colour Gen II, I’d estimate 15+ hours of reading time with wifi/Bluetooth off but frontlight on all the time, halfway up. I’d assume it’s better on the BW due to less need of frontlight.

So it depends on how you use it - if you use it half an hour a day, you’d get 30+ days of reading out of it; if you use it 8 hours a day, then .. well, obviously a lot fewer days.

Size-wise .. for me, 7’’ feels painfully small now that I’m used to a 10’’ screen. I’d prefer 8’’ for the best compromise between portability and screen size, personally. But for reading prose, not PDFs or comics, 7’’ is essentially OK, just takes some adjusting. And the buttons on the Go 7 are lovely (not supported by all apps, sadly, but that’s due to some apps not including any buttons functionality).

Actually, I have to amend my last post - I’ve looked around at NeoReader a bit more on Boox and it does have some sort & filter abilities - including things like recent, finished, reading, unread. So there’s that at least.

But in any case, there’s always the option for an alternative reader, like Koreader which I think has a bunch of plugins and UI options that support various metadata tags, series etc, so there’s probably a workaround available. (I don’t really know much about other Android reading apps - I know there are quite a few though…)

You can go ahead and mail the Inkpad 4 to me.

thanks for the info! I wasn't really aware of it being Android, so Instapaper should work aswell.
