Post-Amazon Sync of Notes/Highlights
Support for BOTH of my Kindle devices was discontinued as promised by Amazon. While I still have access to my books, I've lost a very important functionality. Namely, I can't sync Note/Highlights/Reading Progress as previously.

Searching MobiRead didn't reveal any way to accomplish such synchronization using Calibre, or any other way that I could see. I probably missed something obvious.

I use both of my Kindle DEVICES as well as Kindle Reader on my phone and tablet. I'm guessing that there is not a local file common to both devices and software readers that might be manually transferred between devices when an annotation is added on one which needs to be available on the other?

Other synchronization ideas appreciated. Amazon could have allowed continued functionality for synchronization and still have prevented new downloads.

Do the files in each book's .sdr directory have the same file names (numbers in name match) on both devices? (The extension varies with book file format.) If so you can copy one or two of those file or maybe sync the entire directory.

You might be breaking new ground, but all the information you are asking about is in the .sdr directory.

Thanks for the reply. .sdr directory? No such directory on my Kindle. At least not on my older one. Are you perchance referencing another location? Kindle Reader, for example? My Kindle connected via USB shows as a logical drive w only TWO (2) directories: "documents" and "active-content-data," the latter empty. Show Hidden Files is ON in my File Manager.

What I DO notice are .azw3 files, followed by THREE (3) same-named files but w different EXTENSIONS: ".phi," ".ea" and ".han" w the latter containing info regarding HIGHLIGHTS:

On a later Kindle Paperwhite, for the same book referenced above, there is an .azw3 file, but additionally, in a separate sub-directory w the same name as the book name associated w the .azw3 book are other files w entirely different extensions compared to the older Kindle, namely: .META, .MF, .APNX, AZW6, .PHL, .ASC, .KLL, These are largely unreadable machine language, w some actual English content, but none suggest beginning or ending of Highlights.

This might be a wild goose chase.

The bad news is that your 2 kindles use different book formats, so syncing would require conversion scripts that no one has written. Both are from before when the .sdr directory was introduced. Thank you for including all the details in your second post. That saved what would have been a lot of back and forth.

If you are curious about the misc assoc. files search on KRDS.
