Do we have any more clarity on cut off devices and book licenses?
I know most people here "liberate", so it's not an issue for them. But since my K3 has most of my Kindle books on it, I'm wondering if those books are still counted as a licensed copy? Presumably, the system won't update at this point if I delete a book from the device. I have got the warning a couple of times in the past when downloading a book to too many devices at once.

I just tried this, I found one of my books which had been sent to 4 devices total, one of them a now defunct kindle 3. it looks like the license on that older device counts against the 6-copy-limit. it is also impossible to remove as the option is greyed out.

Thanks for letting me know. It's a bit rude of Amazon to make it impossible to release the license, and for not mentioning it at all in the email notice. It's not the end of the world as we can be flexible with our other devices, but still....

Sounds like they didn’t think through all the problems with “defuncting” some kindles. I wonder if Amazon support can get some software help for “cannot release a license”. Or at least, you might register the problem, and if enough people have the problem, it might get attention. Eventually.

And, of course, my K5 no longer connects to Amazon, so deleting it from my K5 does nothing to release the license ![]() I also can't de-register my K5, either from my device or Amazon's website ![]() I'm going to wait a while to see if Amazon eventually addresses this. If not and I get annoyed enough, I'll contact customer support. |

I'd rather continue this thread in the thread where we are already talking about this topic instead of starting a new topic to end up going over the same things a second time.

People who "liberate" their books and sideload (as Jon does, to my knowledge) have no business in this thread anyway.

I feared this would happen so I made sure I had no books on my two Paperwhite 5th Gen’s. I have six kindles registered without the two now unsupported so I’m running a bit close to using the maximum licences. I do liberate my books so for me it’s not a problem but I guessed Amazon wouldn’t have thought through all the ramifications.

I keep seeing people mention that they're still seeing defunct devices listed in the "Device(s) with this item" list for books in their account. But has anyone actually tried adding the book to another device (purposely going over the limit) to see if the defunct ones are actually being counted against the device limit?
I realize that might be a lot of devices, but each Kindle for PC counts as a device, so with a few eink devices, a phone (maybe a tablet) and a PC or two, it shouldn't be too hard to test. |

ETA: I can't help thinking that this was deliberate on Amazon's part. They told people in so many words to download their libraries to their soon-to-be defunct devices. Especially for someone who might have had more than one heritage device, they could be left with very few licenses to play with. Last edited by issybird; Today at 02:19 PM. |

So, I've got 7 downloads of that book, though MYKCD shows 5. I'm charging an old phone to see if I can get 8. I have no idea what to make of any of that. Last edited by Desertway; Today at 02:36 PM. |

Update: K4PC subsequently crashed, updated, made me re-register, has come back as "Legacy Kindle for PC", and won't allow me to download the book.
After all the confusion, what SEEMS to have happened is that when I downloaded a 7th copy, my K3 just dropped off the list. But Issybird had a different experience, so I'll try it with another book. Last edited by Desertway; Today at 03:47 PM. |

Okay, I was able to duplicate the experience, leaving K4PC out of it because it is acting wonky for me. My K3 was listed for up to 6 downloads of a book. When I downloaded the 7th copy on an old phone, it was allowed, and my K3 dropped off the "devices with this item" list.

I was doing some testing. While I can't delete the book from the Amazon web page, if I deleted the book on my PW1 (5th gen) and then synced, waited a minute, refreshed the list on Amazon and it no longer showed the book as being on my PW1.
Though given some of the very different experiences being report, YMMV should be YMWV (your mileage will vary). |
