eReader recomendations?

I think that Amazon are not about to brick my Kindle, but I am worried about it.

If they were to brick it then I am loathe to give Bezos more of my money, though I am somewhat locked into the Kindle system with several hundred books purchased over the years.

Any recommendations for a replacement reader. I've read about kindle sized eInk android tablets which can run the various apps, ie Kindle, Kobo, bookshop.org. That would be cool.

If running such a thing though, how would Calibre interact with it? I am in the habit of downloading purchases to my Kindle, adding them to the Calibre library and in the process stripping the DRM, and then backing up to a cloud provider. I'd like to be able to do that. Likewise, I'm using Calibre to transfer library books (which always say can't be read on a Kindle) onto my device for the actual reading. I'd like to still be able to do that.

Not bothered by audiobooks. I have different devices for that.

You can't remove the DRM from books downloaded to the Kindle app on an Android tablet. Not even an eink Android tablet.

You can remove DRM from books bought from Kobo even without a Kobo device or app, by downloading the epub file from your Kobo account.
