Device: Kobo clara 2E
Question Do Kobos have a separate chip to store firmware?

I am wondering if there is an external chip that loads the firmware or if there is a boot ROM in the NXP chip that initializes the SD card and that does the rest.

I have a clara 2E but I am wondering about other devices as well.

The CPU chip has embedded firmware to allow it to boot from the on-board storage (either the µSD card or the eMMC chip). If you get enthused, you can also interrupt the boot process and connect using ADB though that is rather fun timing it right.
