What's the current airplane mode strategy?
After a bit with the Kobo Libra Colour, I've decided to try the Kindle Colorsoft. I *really* like the colors compared to the Kobo, and despite being sluggish compared to my ancient Oasis, it still feels quicker than the Kobo.

That said, what is the current strategy regarding airplane mode so that it doesn't update the firmware? When Amazon allowed files to be downloaded to the computer and transferred through USB, it made sense. How does one add books now and prevents the updates?

Only by sideloading everything or by jailbreaking the device. There is no way to download your Kindle books over wifi to your non-jailbroken Kindle and prevent updates at the same time.

Thank you. That’s disappointing to say the least. Is jailbreaking generally safe? I’m concerned about Amazon locking out my account…

I haven't heard that happening to folks who jailbreak their Kindles.

Are you sure that by jailbreaking you can prevent the DRM from being updated and not just the firmware?

The one thing I can think of happening. I can see Amazon not allowing downloads to Kindles that don't support whatever the current version of KFX DRM.

No, but there have been reports here about new DRM not having been applied to jailbroken Kindles with OTA updates disabled. Still, there are other reasons for not wanting updates than DRM - changes to the UI, for example.
