Grouping by first letter of last name disappeared, how to get it back>

The Calibre library interface has always organized the authors in my library in groups by first letter of last name, i.e. groups named A, B, C-D, E etc. I liked that.

After working on updating metadata for several books, this grouping has suddenly disappeared. How can I get it back? I'm not aware of changing any option that might influence this. The partitioning setting I just discovered seems correct.

And a possibly related question: what's the meaning of the top-level icon for each group, that cycles through the group icon, a green plus, and a red minus when I click on the group?

Preferences -> Look & feel -> Tag browser -> Partitioning and collapsing -> Category partition method -> 'By first letter'?
