Calibre stopped working

I was running version 9.4, and it failed to start today, giving me errors. I decided to update to 9.7 which has been a failure. I ended up uninstalling Calibre, and deleting the entire Calibre2 directory plus the appdata/roaming/Calibre2 directory before it would install. then it won't run, it gives me this error:
calibre, version 9.7.0
ERROR: Contacting calibre failed: Failed to contact running instance of calibre, try restarting calibre

[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '\\\\.\\pipe\\CalibreGUI-Johnx'

b'launched:["calibre.exe"]'
I have shut down the PC and restarted several times to get the install to work and have no idea how to proceed
I am running 64 bit Windows 10 because this PC isn't Windows 11 capable

That's a harmless error, close it and keep using calibre. If you cant see calibre it is likely offscreen, use the windows shortcuts to bring offscreen windows back on screen.

alt-tab doesn't let me see it, Taskmgr doesn't see any Calibre processes, not even the background process it used to see. as far as I can tell Caliber never starts

The bolded segment might be sort of a typo, but the correct config dir is appdata/roaming/calibre, not appdata/roaming/Calibre2...

Are you sure there isn't an existing troublesome config dir in place?

I don't know. I fixed it by using REPAIR under INSTALL/UNINSTALL PROGRAMS in Control Panel. I don't know why I didn't think of that originally when v9.4 became corrupt. some anomaly in Windows 10 that gave me a bloody headache. it doesn't make sense but then Windows doesn't always make sense. we used to have Solaris Unix at work(I am retired) and Sun workstations for CADCAM. I miss Unix, it was so much more stable
