I have a small-ish Calibre library (just under 2k titles). Many of my books have way too many tags to use that as a reasonable method of organization on-device. I started using categories instead of tags to give me about a dozen rough groupings for finding things on my e-readers.
I just imported a few hundred ebooks with mucked up metadata, including garbage in the Categories field. Is there a quicker way to clear this up than editing each title's metadata one at a time? My ideal workflow would go something like this: 1. Mass-delete all the category field data from the affected books. 2. Create a search in Calibre to show me all books with empty category fields 3. Go through that search in small batches as I have time, adding categories to books right from that list (without having to right click, mouse over to editing individual metadata, clicking, waiting for a dialog, editing, saving, etc.). I'm really stuck on how to achieve that, though, and I'm afraid of this becoming a huge time suck. |

It would be better to delete the excess tags from each book in your library.
If you are download the metadata for your books, that would be why your tags are a mess. And if you are downloading metadata, stop doing that and do it manually. |

Use the Tag Browser: Tags: Right click on each tag you would NEVER use:You have choices but there are 2 to consider: 1) Rename the tag. Don't worry if the book already has that one. It only appear once. 2) Delete the tag Since this is the tag browser...a normal click will show you the books that USE this tag![]() (relates to Jon's suggestion) Preferences: Metadata download:The top right is the 'master' of what metadata to get "BUT WAIT, There is more" ![]() If you highlight a source on the left, then click the Configure the Selected Source button below that, you get to cherry pick what THAT source can supply. (On does not override the master set to off. You basically want to turn OFF what you do not want from a source) What this does NOT do is turn off metadata from the book during import. |
