Aura E2 I failed to install KOreader and downgrade firmware

New to the forum, hello ^.^

My secondhand Aura E2 arrived this afternoon, and I decided to jailbreak it like I did with my Kindle. Lo and behold, it's inexplicably harder. I managed to avoid the need for logging in and turning on the WIFI, but I haven't been able to install KOreader despite trying every recommended method listed on the github page save the KSM method (I don't think I could do it anyway). Despite being on Linux, I couldn't get the Linux script for the autoinstaller to work, and the manual method for both KFMon and NickelMenu did nothing when I tapped on KOreader.

I eventually figured it must be because my software version. So I tried to downgrade from 4.38.23038 to 3.19.5761. And got no reaction from my device. I really don't know what it is I'm doing wrong

Um.. I don't believe that f/w level was supported on the Aura 2E! See https://pgaskin.net/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html

Also do be careful. You need to know what version of the 2E you have

Ah, yeah, forgot to mention that this device is, like, modded/refurbished. According to the listing's description, it was used as a demo/display model before, so the seller decided to make up for it being an older model by upping the f/w and storage capacity. I checked the software details in the device information setting, and it says 4.38.23038 (ce96bde600, 6/20/24).

Ohhh. I see. Sorry, I misunderstood.

Does this mean downgrading is off the table for me? If so, I guess I'll do without modding for KOreader.

You can downgrade to ANY version of f/w that is supported on your device.

I'm not a KoReader user so I'm skipping that part of your problems

The earliest version of Kobo firmware for the Aura E2 is 4.0.7523. Any earlier version predates the hardware and will not work.

As for jailbreaking a Kobo? An interesting and totally unnecessary concept for an open system.

You're overthinking this. There's no need for a jailbreak, or any sort of firmware version voodoo. It's a very simple process.

Make sure you copy the koreader subdirectory from the .zip to the .adds/ subdirectory on your kobo.

Then it's just a question of how to get it launched. Personally, I use NickelMenu, and with that running, you just need the right menu entry in .adds/nm/

My .adds/nm/koreader looks like this:

menu_item : main : KOReader : cmd_spawn : quiet : exec /mnt/onboard/.adds/koreader/koreader.sh

The path /mnt/onboard/.adds/koreader/koreader.sh should obviously correspond to the location of where you copied your koreader folder.

And then it should just work.
