OpenSSL Error Starting Cailbre

Over the last couple of updates, including the most recent, I've begun getting a FATAL error when opening Calibre, though if I close the message and then relaunch it is usually fine the 2nd time.

The error header is OpenSSL: FATAL

The message body reads

OPENSSL_Uplink(00007FFBEC380C60,08): no OPENSSL_Applink

Does anyone that is techy know what this means? Is it a Calibre issue or being caused by something in library?

What would help is knowing what platform you are using (Windows / Mac / Linux)

Sorry about that. I'm running it on Windows 11.

Try uninstalling openSSL and see if that fixes it. Windows 11 does not come with openSSL. So you'd have to have installed it.

I don't have any such applications installed. The error makes it sound almost like should.

Try a reboot and then launch calibre in debug mode and post the log it produces.

As per usual, after turning on debug mode and rebooting I can't duplicate the issue, even though my most recent Windows reboot was yesterday, and I've done multiple reboots and still continued to see this error. Being in software, I sometimes know it only requires a techy to come within 5 yards of an issue and it goes away.

What happens if you restart ignoring 3rd party plugins?

The issue now is that I can no longer replicate the error. I've had it for weeks, but as soon as I post about it here, it goes away.

When I first joined MR in 2012 I asked why there were so many Guests, there are currently 23518. The answer I got from one of the admins was: "calibre peeks at MR when it is running". No one refuted that; so, I assume it's true.

So, my wild ass guess is that by logging on here you would have renewed your SSL certificates… which would have opened the gates for calibre.

"The more reliant we become on networks, the less we get done."

That is an interesting theory. I am on MR quite frequently, checking out the ebooks, meaning I'm logged in to MR at the same time as running Calibre. However, I will say that I typically open Calibre before MR. So what I'm really trying to say is that I don't know what I'm saying.

I suspect the peeking at MobileRead is tied to checking for updated plugins though that is just a WEG.

Every hour on the half-hour, calibre-ebook.com comes here to update this ==>> https://plugins.calibre-ebook.com/

And that is what the calibre Plugin Update feature uses.

I've been using Calibre and MobileRead today. I saw there was a new 9.4 Calibre, so I downloaded and installed it. As is my usual custom, I closed the installation with the "Launch Calibre" button selected.

The error returned. However, I don't know where to find the debug logs (assuming debug mode is still turned on from before). Acknowledging the error and relaunching Calibre opened the application as normal.

Debug log is not turned on until you turn it on.
