Calibre not shutting down completely when clicking on "X"

I am getting a weird behavior when shutting down Calibre. For example today, I "X"ed Calibre to shut it down, looked in task manager after a couple of minutes, and 3 worker processes were still running. I thought I hadn't left enough time to shut down, so I left my computer on, when out for 4 hours and checked again. They were still running in task manager.

When I started Calibre up without shutting down the tasks, everything looks ok...

Is anyone else seeing this type of behavior?

"Xing" the program only closes the app on-screen. It's still running in the background, hence the worker processes. Look for the icon in the hidden taskbar system tray.

Right click that one to shut down the app altogether.

Goto calibre preferences--look and feel--Main Interface, uncheck Enable system tray icon, that will let you close calibre using the "x".

Hmm, I see a Base64 image URL when quoting OP? Is this a new thing on MR?

Not with worker processes, as far as I noticed. When doing frequent restarts I see that happening with calibre-debug.exe and sometimes calibre.exe...

The Enable system tray icon is not checked. I have never had it turned on.

The decoded screenshot in post #5 suggests otherwise. Very strange, no Apps running and a bunch of calibre workers - where is "The main calibre program" - suggest you show Publisher and sort by that.

The L&F->Main interface->Enable system tray icon (needs restart) option is not the only way to run calibre in the tray. I have this from Actual Title buttons, although I never use it.

There's possibly something similar in Powertoys, Workstation Master, Fences etc… probably with an unbidden or even worse… a hidden shortcut.

All calibre workers are shutdown before calibre itself exits, you dont need to wait after it exits for worker shutdown. It sounds like calibre is crashing on your system during shutdown and thus cannot kill its workers. Try running in debug mode and see if there are any errors in the log

Thanks everyone for the help. No matter what I do today, I can't get Calibre to recreate what in the world was happening yesterday. Today everything is co-operating no matter what I do. If it happens again, I'll repost with a debug log, but for now everything is back to normal. I'm sure it will happen again at some point because this kind of stuff happens to me all the time.
Maybe Calibre is just chuffed that I posted here and decided "Now that you have posted to MobileRead I'll be good".

Again everyone

So here's what's happening to me. I use Calibre Portable, and have been for over 15 years.

When I try to install the latest update - Calibre Portable 9.3.1, I now get this pop-up and there seems to be no way to actually install the update. There is no sign of Calibre running in Task Manager or Services or anywhere either.

Can anybody help?

Calibre runs as "The main calibre program". Try putting Publisher in Task Manager's columns, sort on it and scroll to 'calibre-ebook.com'

That popup means a process is running. If you cant find it, then a reboot will clear it out.
