The fourth book in the “Anne of Green Gables” series centers on Anne Shirley’s experiences as a young adult. Now age twenty-two, she takes a three-year position as principal of Summerside High School while her fiancé Gilbert Blythe completes medical school. Living in a “tower room” at Windy Willows with two widows and their sharp-tongued housekeeper, Rebecca Dew, Anne navigates a new town, wins over the snobbish Pringle clan, and befriends her lonely young neighbor, Elizabeth Grayson.

(This is the unabridged UK version. The book was published first in the US in a slightly abridged form as Anne of Windy Poplars (because the publisher felt it would be confused with Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows). Eleven of the “Tomgallon tragedies” were cut by the US publisher as being too gruesome.)

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) was a prolific Canadian author, best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. The title character, orphan Anne Shirley, made Montgomery famous in her lifetime and gave her an international following. Although her work is frequently categorized as "juvenile fiction," adults continue to be devoted readers. Almost all of her works are still published today.
