Can't open saved file in Book Designer

I've been working on H. G. Wells' "Tono Bungay" - I saved the file, but now BD can't open it, instead I get a message saying:
"Cannot convert to Book Designer format"

Is there any way to resolve this?

Some more info: when I tried to run Book Designer by itself, it said it couldn't convert BookDesignerBlank.htm.
I reinstalled BD, it then opened ok - but when I try to load the Wells' book, it starts to spawn multiple blanks windows.
So I kill BD, and try running it by itself and it's back to saying it can't convert BookDesignerBlank.htm.

I couldn't figure out a way to salvage my work, so I removed and reinstalled Book Designer, and started from scratch.

Seems better now though.
