Hacks Struggling to jail break old kindle device

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to install KOReader on an old Kindle 7th Generation (Serial beginning with 90C6, Firmware 5.12.2.2).

The problem is that I cannot seem to actually mount the device on either Mac or Linux. When I connect to any machine with a usb cable, I get a momentary message that it's in USB mode and cannot be used, but it quickly goes away.

I have tried multiple cables and multiple ports to no avail. Is my device faulty or is there something I'm missing?

Have you verified any of the cables work for data with another device? It's always possible that the port on the Kindle is worn, dirty, or damaged.

I don't seem to actually have another device that's still micro usb to verify, which is why I went through a variety of cables - under the assumption that five cables being bad is crazy.

What's weird is that it switches to USB mode for a split second and gives up...
