No catalog loaded after updating to 9.2.1

Hello,

I updated to 9.2.1 today and when I open Calibre now, all of my books are missing. It shows 0 books.

How might I repair this? Any ideas?

Thank you.

Where is your library located? On a local drive? Network drive? Cloud drive?

Everything has been stored in onedrive. Maybe I've just been lucky until now, but I've updated many times, for years, without an issue.

I see my .opf files are still on onedrive, but the metadata.db seems to be the new empty one, given its size.

Does this mean I should be able to get at least partway back to where I was by repairing the database?

Yes. But do move your files to a local drive. You can create a backup copy of your library in OneDrive, if you want, and keep it up to date with FreeFileSync.

Sadly, your comment is almost a template for many of the comments about losing libraries stored on network storage (cloud storage mainly but NAS boxes on the local network have also caused issues).

"I've kept my library on <cloud storage of choice other than Google Drive> for years but now my library has disappeared."

Since Google Drive uses the same structure for versioning (the (xxxx) after the directory name) that calibre uses to store the ID, it will crash and burn very shortly.

Keep backups in cloud storage and your live library on your local machine.

I've had a similar problem recently, my problem was caused by my Box software failing to run at start up, but as you can see your OneDrive location, I guess that OneDrive.exe must be running.

The real reason for this post is to say that the restore database function is very quick and worked ok for me. If you're going to move to local storage, the export / import function will do the trick, but export is not very quick, somewhere about 90 minutes for 9GB of cloud based storage. I didn't have to use restore, so I don't know how long it would take.

Best of Luck.

Ian.

I found a recent (most likely the most recent) version of metadata.db in my onedrive recycle folder. It is dated Feb 11 and is over 3 MB.

Is that likely to be compatible with Calibre v9? Might I be able to swap out the 2 versions of metadata.db?

Also, I see versions of metadata_db_prefs_backup.json. Might I be able to use that as well? Would that get all of most of my settings back?

Then, I'll figure out a safer way to manage things. And, once I figure this out, I can keep my books on the cloud, it's "just" the Calibre files that should be local? Is that correct?

Thanks for any help with this!

You'll need to figure out which of those files are the ones you need, and after restoring them you'll need to run Check Library, especially the part about the database and files matching.

And the book files need to be local as well, not only the database files.
