Exclamation Dictionary Lookup Re-styled with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) Rules

Good evening,

Following our relatively short discussion with Kovid and his generous support to my request, I'm glad to present a modified lookup file for the Calibre E-Viewer, with various popular online dictionaries re-styled to ensure distraction-free reading experience. The modified file uses a non-destructive approach as it doesn't affect any default ones.

By no means should the presented lookup script considered an ad-blocker! The goal is to remove, as much as possible, certain webpage elements that obstruct views and make the use of custom dictionaries cumbersome. In fact, the idea comes from a versatile dictionary extension that I've been using lately, which also provides a facility to mask webpage elements to ease dictionary lookups.

Supported dictionaries as of Feb 08, 2026:
Supported Calibre version: 9.0 and above

Installation workflow:
  • Select any of the above-listed dictionaries and add as a new lookup source in Calibre E-Viewer. Just make sure to change the {lang} parameter in the URL to one of the languages used in the source.
  • Create a directory named 'resources', if you haven't done already. This will make sure that you don't touch the default lookup file;
  • Copy the modified file lookup.js to the newly created 'resources' directory.

Basically, this is all you need to look up any word from your e-book in one of the added dictionaries at a time.

Suggestions to add more sources are always welcome.

Hope it helps!
