Send-to-Kindle better on old Voyage than PW6

I luckily kept an old Kindle Voyage, so I can still use the Send-to-Kindle feature to import KFX files into Calibre without the new post 5.18.5 hardened drm. It may be just my device, but I've noticed that this is a lot easier and smoother with the Voyage: I click the "deliver or remove from device" button, select the Voyage, and the book appears and downloads quickly and smoothly.

With the PW6, when I turn the device wifi on, sometimes a bunch of newly purchased books appear at the top of the library screen, but don't download. Other times, a load of books start downloading by themselves, and the actual book I want has to sit "queued" for ages. And all of this takes so much longer than on the Voyage, the whole process just so much more "buggy" and laggy.

Both devices use the same wifi in the same location. Is it because the PW6 has several thousand books on it, while the Voyage is empty apart from dictionaries and My Clippings? Otherwise, I can't see why the PW6 is so bad at such a seemingly simple function.

When you buy new eBooks from Amazon, it's most likely that your default device is the PW6. So when you turn on WiFi, new eBook(s) are automatically delivered to your PW6. You can change the default device to the Kindle Cloud Reader. Then no eBooks will be delivered to your PW6 unless you manually select for delivery. I don't know if you can turn off default delivery. But the Cloud Reader is good for me as I never use it.

There is no longer a "Deliver to" dropdown menu on Kindle Store product pages, and setting a Kindle to Default device has zero effect on the Deliver or remove from device list. And there's no way to set Cloud Reader as default. Purchases just go to your library, and don't download automatically anywhere (any more - this went away years ago).

So I do not know why there would be spontaneous downloading on the PW6.

There's only 2 ways it can happen: you initiate from the Digital Content web page, or you tap on something in your library that isn't downloaded. It's easy to do the latter if you are scrolling with swipes in the middle of the screen, better to use the scroller up/down arrows to page.

You can set a default device to send new purchases to.

On Amazon.com...
  • In the Account & Lists menu, select Devices
  • Click the Kindle icon (not the icon for a Kindle device)
  • Find Kindle Cloud Reader and under More Actions, select Set as default device

It's that easy.

You are correct, I had poked around in there but didn't check the Kindle application section. Thanks. I must have switched it to Cloud Reader several years ago.

I was also wrong that it does not affect Deliver/Remove: I forgot to refresh the Content page I had open after setting a default device.

If I switch on WiFi on any Kindle I have and there is book(s) not yet downloaded, it automatically downloads. Then I turn off WiFi.
Newest Kindle is a PW3
