Den tilsyneladende rige og filantropiske doktor Ox har bosat sig i den søvnige lille flamske by Quiquendone, og har tilbudt byen at etablere et nyt og moderne system til oplysning ved hjælp af gas. Rørene er allerede lagt, og flere steder har man taget den nye belysning til sig, da flere og flere af byens borgere begynder at opføre sig mærkeligt, og forvandler sig fra ultraflegmatiske borgere til aggressive og krigeriske vilddyr.
