Manga EPUBs from Shueisha
@kovidgoyal
Could you please add support for reading the covers of manga EPUBs from Shueisha, a major Japanese publisher? They have a rather unique EPUB structure and cannot be opened in the calibre viewer. Full support isn't necessary, but since calibre can't even detect the cover image, converting them to KEPUB and sending them to Kobo eReaders results in a cover image automatically generated by calibre being applied. The EPUB3 renderer on Kobo eReaders fully supports Shueisha manga EPUBs, so there are no issues reading them there. If needed, I can send you some sample EPUBs via PM. Secondly, there is a small bug in calibre's KEPUB conversion engine where 縦中横 (Tate-chu-yoko, horizontal-in-vertical) for Japanese eBooks does not work. The Japanese community has identified that there is an issue with the positioning of koboSpans. |

If their EPUBs are standards compliant they should work. If not, they arent really EPUBs anymore just some random thing with an EPUB file extension. Adding support for them would depend very much on how broken they are and whether they can be identified unambiguously and efficiently based on their OPF files.
As for kobo span generation since I cant read Japanese fixing that is not possible for me, patch is welcome. |

I've created a PR. Since I don't have coding skills, I had Gemini 3 Pro do the vibe coding for me, so I'm not sure about the code quality of the modified parts. I've confirmed that the fix works by displaying it on an actual Kobo eReader. |

There are two OPF files, but advanced.opf is clearly unnecessary for general reading systems (I believe it's only needed for their proprietary reading system). standard.opf is a normal OPF file, and if read, the file order should be correctly recognized (since they are manga, they are fixed-layout EPUBs, and each page is an image). However, the properties="cover-image" attribute is not specified, which is probably why the cover image cannot be recognized. |

Thank you for the quick response. This should now allow the proper cover images to be displayed when transferring to Kobo eReaders, instead of the ones automatically generated by calibre.
Also, the fix for tate-chu-yoko is definitely a very meaningful improvement for Japanese users. On another note, I didn't know the name of that proprietary EPUB derivative format, but it's hilarious that they call it "Open" when its technical specifications aren't publicly available and no publisher other than Shueisha has adopted it. Still, since Shueisha is one of Japan's major publishers, Japanese vendors, including Rakuten Kobo, can't afford to ignore them… |
