Upgrade from Aura H2O to Aura One?

I've enjoyed my Aura H2O but the battery is showing signs of severe degradation so I think it's time to update. I'm used to a bigger than 6" screen so I don't think I'd like the Clara BW and I can't seem to find any Libra 2's for sale so I'm wondering if it makes sense to upgrade to the Aura One. My main concern about the Aura One is the number of charge cycles and how degraded the battery capacity might be. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

Personally I don't think getting an Aura One now is a good idea. It's just too old. What to get is difficult to answer, as Kobo has no black and white 7-8'' devices except for the Sage, and even the Sage is already over 4 years old. Maybe Kobo will release something in 2026, maybe not.

I'd get the Sage, if nothing else turns up soon enough.

IMHO, the only reason to get the Aura One is if you're able to swap the battery as the Aura H2O is more difficult to change the batter.

I agree that the Aura One may be fine if you can replace the battery. If you like your H2O,I'm guessing you would like the Aura One.

Kobo has no 8" ereader, but they do. Right up there with my favorite saying: "they are exactly the same, only different".

And yes, I'm aware of the availability issues.

What? I said "except for", not "they don't have, but they do". And I meant current devices, of course, not those discontinued.

I saw the Youtube video from the French Canadian guy that was replacing the micro USB port and I'm not really excited about cutting through the glue. If it was held together by clips like the Glo I'd be a lot more optimistic about replacing the battery when the time comes. I have yet to find the exact replacement battery as well, but I did find one for the Aura that is 1mm thicker which probably isn't an issue but someone said it doesn't have the correct plug. I'm just trying to see what I'm getting in to before shelling out cash. lol

I'm sure I would like it but I'm not very excited about cutting through the glue to take it apart and then finding replacement glue to put it back together.

In what I quoted, I can see that you said "except for". Still seems strange to me.

When your "except for" eliminates 1/2 of a previous statement, it seems a little strange/funny, to me.

How about these...

None of Kobo's current ereaders are 300DPI, except for the its 6", 7" and 8" models.
Kobo offers BW for all of it's current ereaders, except for its 7" and 8" devices.
Kobo only has a reader >9", except for its 6", 7" and 8" readers.

And just to be ridiculous, I wonder how this would work in a legal case...

Judge: "You have been found guilty of 2 counts of 1st degree murder."
Murderer: "But Judge, except for that 2nd person I murdered, I only murdered one person."

Just an opinion. I'm comfortable being the only one with this opinion/quirk.

I did see one video that the person used double-sided sticky tape instead of glue when he put the H20 back together.

Aura One is 2016 ... that's getting on. My own Aura One seems to be doing fine as far as the battery is concerned, but I don't read on it as often as my Sage or Forma. Still, I did haul it out for some reading recently, and saw no evidence that the battery was in bad shape.

The Aura One did have a slightly touchy touchscreen, in that it is a bit unpleasant to annotate with, but it's a nice device with a good screen. Still, at 10 years old, the chances of getting a degraded battery are quite high. My official Aura One cover though seems to be falling apart on its own. I've not seen that in other Kobo official covers. The material is just degrading sitting on a shelf!

I'd recommend a Forma or Sage, or keep looking for a Libra 2. Or consider a Pocketbook Era. Or even a Kindle.

Unless you are handy enough with tech to change batteries. (I'm not.)

Thanks I'll take a look. Part of the problem is the batteries linked to in the forums on Aliexpress can't be shipped to the US any longer. I know it might seem excessive to try and solve a problem that isn't a problem yet but I know eventually I'll have to start charging the battery every day and given the age of the Aura One I think that will happen sooner rather than later.

With what people are asking for the Forma, Sage and Libra 2 on ebay I've started looking at the 2024 Paperwhite and jailbreaking it. That would let me get a new device so I wouldn't have to worry about the battery and jailbreaking lets me use the KOReader, turn off the Amazon data collection which would be nice and still read epubs without doing any converting. Seems like a win, win, win. Have you noticed any issues or gotchas associated with jailbreaking, other than probably void the warranty? Thanks

Unless you are handy enough with tech to change batteries. (I'm not.)

So I've started thinking about getting a 2024 Paperwhite and jailbreaking it so I can run KOReader. That way I can still access all of my epubs without having to convert or do anything weird. It doesn't really seem like there are any downsides to jailbreaking but I was wondering with all of your travels around the forum if you've noticed any downsides or big gotchas with jailbreaking? Thanks again.

The only gotcha I've read of is incorrectly resetting a jailbroken Kindle.

That's good news. The more I look in to it the more it seems like jalibreaking a PW6 is the way to go for me. Especially since no soldering is required.
