Do people here really complain about how their built? To me they are far ahead in terms of portability and formatting compared to how most for-profit publishers make theirs, especially when it comes to padding, margins, and white space.

Which is silly. Customizing the epub by making a few changes to the style css is as easy as... using Sigil or Calibre. Standard eBooks epubs don't always display the book cover when I import into Calibre, but that's an easy fix. Standard eBooks is a nice resource for PD books, and the more of those we have, PD books and resources for them, the better.

Sadly, I have to agree with @ownedbycats here about one member's continual kvetching.

For me, @Hasdrubal_Lector has it right—Sigil (with occasional sidetrips into calibre's ebook-editor) let me easily fix up my issues with Standard eBooks and their code is a lot cleaner than Gutenberg's idiosyncratic coding. For most people, they would be happy with Standard eBooks formatting since they will never open the ePub and look at it's internals.
