James Kirke Paulding (22. August 1778 in Nine Partners, New York – 6. April 1860 in Hyde Park, New York) war ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller und US Secretary of the Navy.

Ursprünglich sollte „Koningsmarke, the Long Finne (1823)“ eigentlich eine Parodie auf James Fenimore Coopers neuartige und erfolgreiche Abenteuerromane werden. Während des Schreibprozesses hat sich der zweibändige Roman aber sehr schnell und gekonnt an das neue Genre angepasst. Paulding verarbeitet hier in humoristischer Weise die Geschichte der schwedischen Niederlassungen („Neuschweden“; 1638-55) am Delaware.
