FYI a standard mini USB cable will not work. The Reader will not be able to communicate through it.

Ok so one with a barrel works. But not any USB cable. People have had problems when they tried to use the ones that came with their camera and whatnot. I'm not sure what the barrel one does differently, maybe the pinouts are different.

What do you mean it "will not work"? Will not work for what? The USB cable for the Sony is no different than any other USB cable.

Perhaps you are confusing that with a USB charger. For some reason you can't use a USB mains charger to charge the Sony. It must be connected to a PC in order to charge from USB. So, a mains charger that uses the barrel connector is needed.
