Sage Best way to convert epub to Kepub in Calibre

I've always converted to mobi and back to epub, to remove any DB-corrupting gremlins.

I've been informed it is better to convert epub to kepub. Can you tell me the best way to do this? I presume it is via a Calibre plugin. I am using a Sage if it makes any difference.

The best way is to leave epub as you main format and check the option "Use Kobo Viewer for EPUB" in the Kobo driver settings in Calibre. This sends a kepub to your Kobo, converting on the fly, but won't clutter your library with kepubs

Why convert to mobi and back? That seems like a pointless endeavour.

If your ePub is a piece of crap, a conversion to mobi removes most ePub features and the conversion to ePub from mobi gives you an ePub that is about 2 steps from a pure text file.

For some people this is easier than actually fixing the ePub which does take some knowledge.

Oddly, the majority of the crap ePubs that I have been exposed to have come from illicit sites. For some reason, people seem to feel that any ePubs that they download for free are public domain so it is okay to send me a copy to take a look at. A bit strangely, 9 out of 10 ebooks that I've been sent have included a copyright page with many decades to go before the ebook would enter public domain.

I would prefer to stay within calibre. kepubify appears to be an additional program.

Up to now, I convert epub to mobi and back to epub. To remove gremlins that can upset an e-reader. I have been advised this is not the way to go. I don't care about losing advanced formatting for simple novels, but I would like to try kepubs.

If you have an epub in such bad shape that going to and from mobi is needed, then you still have to do that process. The reason that works is because of how limited mobi is, converting to mobi will automatically shuck most of the formatting that you don't want. Converting from epub to kepub will not achieve this.

Unfortunately, due to a Calibre bug that has existed since the dawn of time, going to and from mobi will double indents, so is not always ideal.

Plus, it can make a right mess of the ePub and screw with the formatting. What you really want is to learn HTML/CSS and go in to the editor and fix what's broken or what you want to change. Most ePub is easy enough to modify to how I want it. Mobi really needs to die.

Is this still current advice?

Spouse is using our new Clara and she says she can't change line spacing. Will this tweak fix that? If so, how do I apply it to epubs already on the device?

Yes, that is still current advice. It's easier for me to edit the ePubs without the extra Kobo spans and have them added when the ePub is sent to my Kobo.

Frankly I don't know if it fixes the line-spacing bug, because I edit all my books manually. You can try. For books already on the device, you must remove them and send them again, there's no other way.
