can you remove drm from books.rakuten.co.jp?

i am learning Japanese and currently using amazon.jp for books but plan to also get books from rakuten.co.jp to diversify where i get my books.

i have been searching if books obtained from rakuten.co.jp can be de-drmed the same as those obtained from kobo.com to add to my calibre library.

from what i have read you can not download drm protected works off the website.

i do not own a kobo reader.

If you can download the books using ADE, then yes. Otherwise, probably not.

Yes, you can. You can login into the old Kobo desktop client (https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/artic...your-PC-or-Mac) and then use the Obok plugin. You log into the Kobo client with your Rakuten account, download the book and then use Obok in Calibre.

If you get a Kobo down the line you can also use that with Obok.

I've been struggling with it for a few hours now. I bought a Japanese book that just released, I log in with Rakuten ID. The book gets downloaded automatically, I tried opening it and closing the apps but I can't get my userkey and constantly get the following error: "No userkeys found to decrypt books with. No point in proceeding."
Is there anyone that could enlighten me on how to fix that error? Or even give me an alternate method to get the key such as using an emulator? (I tried that but there was no SQlite file that I could use, but maybe I need a specific version?).
Thanks if anyone answers

What app are you using? I don't think Obok works with the Android or iOS Kobo apps, only physical Kobos or the Kobo Desktop app (https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/artic...your-PC-or-Mac). It should pickup the directory to use correctly automatically. Are you using the Obok plugin installed in Calibre?

It works fine for me on Windows 11 anyways, dunno about modern macOS.

I tried the android version bc I was tired of unsuccessful tries on Kobo desktop (W11). But I used it, the file was located in `%localappdata%\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition` as it should be, and files there were constantly updating when opening/closing the app and the book. So I'm sure it was the right location.
Also I want to note that the book I owned never let me download it, I even tried on a difference device and the download icon was only showing for a few seconds after re logging to the desktop app (I assumed it was autodownloading, but it may be a difference with the Kobo JP store, which I know prevent some books to be downloaded).

I inspected the sqlite file and it contained a table called userkey, but a very small one weirdly enough.

I downloaded the 'DeDRM_tools_7.2.1.zip' available on github, and installed both the extension successfully (Obok and DeDRM). I'm fairly certain the issue lies with the fact that the file doesn't contain my (full) userkey. But I can't be sure bc that's the only book I own on Kobo.
Additionally I went to try the ADE way, but it's not possible in my case because my book can't be downloaded on the website, there is no such option.

Might be related to this: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=370849

There are newer versions of DeDRM too you should try: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=253119

I personally haven't run into any books that won't download. Can you open the book in Kobo desktop? If so, then it should be downloaded.
