John Sandford's 'Prey' Novels

How dark are John Sandford's Prey/Lucas Davenport novels? I don't mind a bit of darkness/grittiness, as I very much enjoy the Charlie Parker novels by John Connally. However, I don't like bleak crime fiction, nor do I like overly graphic/sadistic depictions of violence and actions by the villain.
