Annotations for non-purchased epubs

Does that mean I wouldn't be able to export annotations done on documents sent from Push to Kindle via Dropbox or DRM free book epubs?

Yes, you can export annotations from sideloaded books. Not to your Kobo account, though - only to a computer. And they won't be synced between devices and apps.

If you add ExportHighlights=true under [FeatureSettings] in Kobo eReader.conf, you can export highlights and annotations from any book by tapping on it under My Books.

Great, thanks all. What I now really wonder is if it can name the exported text file automatically.

At 2 minutes and 52 seconds into this video an export modal box is shown. Will I have to type out the filename every time there, or will it pick up the document title or filename by itself?

Weird perhaps, but I would export a lot and having to type it out manually would make me look for another device.

I've never typed it out manually, it has always been automatic.

And the firmware is basically the same for all devices when it comes to Kobo? The feature will be there for Elipsa 2E as well as Clara BW?

The export feature should be the same for all models. There are a few differences between models, like stylus support. But most features work on all Kobos.

Thanks! And before pushing the purchase button... Are there clipping/highlight/annotation limits for my DRM-free documents? That's the reason I'm switching away from Kindle in the first place.

I'm not aware of there being any. I think it would have been brought up here if there were.

Keep in mind that when you export annotations, all you get is the text you highlighted and the note you typed out for that highlight in a long list. There is no reference to where in the book the highlight came from, so if you care about that sort of thing, you'll need to do a bunch of editing to the exported highlights. The feature is pretty primitive.

I use Kobo Utilities and it lists chapter (if there is one) and % progress
I make sure to do a large enough highlight, so Search on a source odt file always works. Search on Calibre Ebook viewer will work too.
