Kobo Desktop discontinued?

I just went to download the installer for Kobo desktop after resetting my computer, and it appears to be discontinued?

https://www.kobo.com/desktop and http://www.kobosetup.com/ just redirects to https://www.kobo.com/p/web-reader now.

Yes, the Kobo Desktop help page still exists:

https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/artic...your-PC-or-Mac

but as you noted, kobosetup.com just redirects to the web reader page. Since Kobo didn't bother to update Kobo Desktop for the Clara BW or Clara/Libra Colour, I suppose the writing was on the wall. You may be able to download the installer from a third party, but who knows how long it will continue to work.

Without Kobo Desktop, how can a Kobo with older firmware that needs to be updated before it can connect to WiFi get updated if you don't know about manually downloading the firmware and manually updating the firmware

I don't know if they are dropping it forever (it would suck), but I just tried and chatted through the Customer Service box, and they provided me with the direct link to the installer.

could you maybe post a link? id like to have a backup in case the website doesnt come back.

this would be a huge blow if they stopped supporting the pc app entirely. its the easiest way to download your books in bulk

edit: theres an faq further down the page:

I'm looking for the Kobo Desktop App. Where can I find it?
We're excited for you to experience Kobo Web Reader, which makes reading your eBooks on your computer easier than ever, directly in your browser.

For most people, Kobo Web Reader provides a seamless experience for accessing your library. However, if you require the Kobo Desktop App for specific functions like setting up or performing updates on an older Kobo eReader, or transferring content via USB, you can still download it here:

Windows

MacOS

We recommend Kobo Web Reader for general reading on your computer.

I can't find the further FAQ, but I can confirm the link they provided me is the same one as the one linked there: Direct Link for Windows

If you scroll down the Kobo page a bit, there is a FAQ: "I'm Looking for the Kobo Desktop App" and there are download links there.

The FAQ definitely didn't have the direct links when I first visited the website

From posts on the web I gather that even an old Kobo Touch which is still fully functional today has sync’ing capabilities within its UI so I’m wondering if the desktop software was ever a requirement to perform updates on the reader, or if such updates have always been OTA?

If the latter, desktop software back then might have served a useful function as a web store front but in this day and age with enhanced online security and financial transactions it is merely a hurdle between me and my ereader:

I’d rather not have to install software on Mac and Windows machines but rather just go to a website, and I’m sure Kobo wants to save the cost of having to maintain various desktop apps.

The desktop app imho wasn’t even that useful. It would only handle books bought on Kobo and the moment Kobo lost the rights to sell a book you could not and cannot redownload such a book. This happened to approx. 70% of my purchases. Clearly Calibre Saved The Day.

One issue with older devices on old f/w is that they lack the required security protocols and certificates to download from the sites where the f/w is stored.

The first Kobo didn't even have WiFi. You either had to use the Kobo desktop app, ADE or sync with a Blackberry over Bluetooth to read DRMd books.
