Amazon announces Kindle Scribe Colorsoft at Sept. 30 Devices Event

Official Amazon PR announcement: https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/dev...e-scribe-color

Mentions a new stylus pen and new rendering engine for the display.

Does not mention implementing the new Workspace and other notebook software features on the previous Scribe models. Does mention bringing the AI-powered book summary features to the iOS app and other Kindles.

https://www.engadget.com/amazon-even...100017137.html

(I'll add highlights here to save people needing to scroll the live feed)

Kindle Scribe
Kindle Scribe with FrontLight
Kindle Scribe Colorsoft

It is 5.4mm thick, 400g, and no longer has asymmetric bezels. The display stack was thinned, and has a claimed latency of under 12ms.

The new design has both B&W and color display models.

There is a Scribe Workspace app that allows import and export to Google Drive and OneDrive. You can export notes to OneNote and Alexa+.

AI-powered Notebook search. Book summary Story So Far and Ask This Book are claimed to be spoiler-free and AI-powered.

(They've moved to Echo devices so this is all for the Scribe)

11 inch display, up from the 10.2 of the 2022 and 2024 Scribes

New Home screen with a Quick Notes section

https://www.engadget.com/mobile/tabl...145031938.html

This article calls it "Scribe 3" which I think is editorializing it like was done by calling the Scribe 2024 the "Scribe 2".

https://www.engadget.com/mobile/tabl...145147981.html

Engadget hands-on with the new Scribes. Their description wording makes it clear that it is Kaleido, like the other Colorsoft models.

Quote:
Like the Kindle Colorsoft that Amazon announced in 2023, the Scribe Colorsoft uses a color filter and LEDs. What’s slightly different is a new rendering engine that Amazon said “enhances the color and ensures writing is fast, fluid and totally natural.”
Quote:
The redesigned home page will be launching later this year, and older Kindle devices will be able to update to the new software.
This still doesn't directly say if the older Scribe will be getting the new Workspace app and Notebook features.

https://www.amazon.com/kindle/shop/kindle-scribe

The official product pages are now public. In them Amazon describes the B&W models as:

Quote:
Generation Kindle Scribe (3rd Generation)
And the color model as:

Quote:
Generation Kindle Scribe Colorsoft (1st Generation)
I'll take back the comment that Engadget was editorializing about "Scribe 3", partially. Amazon is calling them the 3rd gen, but only the B&W models. They have skipped a generation, as the 2024 Scribe is still listed as:

Quote:
Kindle Scribe 1st generation - 2024 release

Ridiculous price for the colour and in the UK and Germany we have to wait until next year. Very disappointed.

I wonder if the “importing and exporting” will relate to only notes or if it would allow books as well. Maybe PDFs, like the reMarkable.

Key Takeaways:

1. The Kindle Petite Color is proven to be a hoax.
2. Kindle is fighting against Boox and Remarkable.
3. The end of Kindle Oasis. No hope this time.

1. The reMarkable is terrible for I/O.
2. reMarkable and Scribe need remote server and accounts for functionality.
3. The Elipsa is far better in/out, meta-data, annotations, handwriting conversion locally, and needs no account or server.

4. The Color Scribe will be like the new mono Scribe generally, except darker, poorer contrast and basic colours. Hence front light.

Are notes and or annotations on the Elipsa portable in any way? I thought they remain on the device. I’m still looking for an eink device that would allow me to scribble on a book and move those scribbles outside of the device it was created on. I know it’s not ideal, but I’ve been experimenting with the reMarkable ecosystem and I can do that fairly easily.

I was hoping for something with buttons. The dream lives on. I agree that there’s little hope at this point.

so it is fair to say, Scribe is no longer the most affordable option for electronic note taking then, that was the only reason I purchased the original scribe, still works like a charm. why are they removing the front light though, like who was asking for it?

What do you mean by “proper I/O”. Google Drive and One Drive connections?

Interesting. They only reference viewing Scribe Notebooks on the mobile version of the Kindle app:

Quote:
5. Can I view my notes on other Kindle surfaces?

You can view your Kindle Scribe notebooks through the Kindle app for iOS and Android. To access them, go to the “More” tab in the app and select “Notebooks” to view all the notebooks created on your Kindle Scribe. Additionally, you can view any highlights or sticky notes you made in books; however, you can’t view underlines or Active Canvas notes.
They do not mention the macOS Kindle app any more.

Well that all went in the opposite direction of my hopes and dreams. I wanted smaller and cheaper. We got bigger and crazy expensive.
